Why industry cant wait to secure its infrastructure
The quantum era is no longer a theoretical future event—it is a present-day business risk. Critical industries such as energy, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunications, healthcare, and finance depend on cryptography to protect the data, systems, and operational technologies that underpin daily operations. Yet adversaries are already harvesting encrypted data today with the expectation of decrypting it once cryptographically relevant quantum computers become available, creating an immediate "harvest now, decrypt later" threat.
History has shown that technology transitions involving cryptography often take a decade or longer to complete, while most organizations still lack a comprehensive inventory of where cryptography exists across their IT, OT, cloud, and supply-chain environments. Governments, standards bodies, and critical infrastructure operators worldwide are now urging organizations to begin discovery, inventory, risk assessment, and migration planning immediately because the cost, complexity, and operational impact of waiting will only increase over time.
Organizations that act now will gain visibility, reduce risk, improve resilience, and create a controlled pathway to post-quantum security. Those that delay risk facing compressed timelines, higher remediation costs, regulatory pressure, and the potential exposure of decades of sensitive intellectual property, operational data, and critical communications.
