The Wireless Bottleneck of Edge AI: Making Smart Glasses Truly Wearable

Smart glasses combine continuous sensing, Edge AI processing and wireless connectivity within an extremely constrained power and thermal budget. As AI workloads and sensor data rates increase, moving data between the glasses, smartphone and nearby edge devices can become a major system bottleneck.

This talk explores how Bluetooth and UWB can provide complementary connectivity for next-generation smart glasses. Bluetooth enables persistent low-power control and ecosystem integration, while UWB communication can support high-data-rate, low-latency transfer of sensor and AI data to nearby computing devices. Beyond precise ranging, UWB can therefore serve as an energy-efficient short-range communication link for distributed Edge AI. Used together, these technologies could allow smart glasses to distribute sensing, computing and communication intelligently across the glasses, smartphone and nearby edge devices.

Drawing on imec’s work in ultra-low-power wireless technologies, the talk will highlight how energy per bit, latency, data rate and radio activation strategies can help make Edge AI glasses practical and truly wearable.

Edge AI creates the intelligence, but low-power wireless determines whether the product is actually wearable.
