When Wireless Networks Become Sensors: Safety Without Surveillance

Wireless networks were originally designed to connect people and devices. Today, they are evolving into intelligent infrastructure that can also provide insights into what is happening in the physical environment.

In this keynote, Fabian van Prooijen, CEO of RadioSense, explores the emerging field of device-free sensing and the business opportunities it creates. By analysing changes in existing Wi-Fi and other radio signals, wireless infrastructure can support applications such as presence detection, safety monitoring and operational insight—without cameras, microphones, wearables or any device carried by the person being monitored.

The session combines a technical and commercial perspective. It explains how developments in edge AI, embedded computing and next-generation connectivity are enabling wireless networks to move beyond communication alone. It also addresses the practical requirements for bringing device-free sensing into real environments, including privacy by design, reliability, interoperability and integration with existing platforms.

From a business perspective, Fabian will discuss how wireless sensing can develop from dedicated deployments into scalable sensing-as-a-service models, software licensing and integration with routers, access points and future 5G and 6G infrastructure. This creates opportunities for network operators, hardware manufacturers, system integrators and service providers to generate new recurring revenue from infrastructure that is already widely deployed.

The keynote will illustrate the potential across elderly care, smart buildings, security and critical infrastructure, including selected dual-use applications. Attendees will gain insight into both the technology and the emerging value chain behind device-free sensing—and how it can enable safer and smarter environments without introducing surveillance.
