The Third Wave of LoRaWAN: From Connected Sensors to Operational Edge

LoRaWAN has already proved itself as a long-range, low-power connectivity layer. The next challenge is different: making LoRaWAN data useful inside real operational environments.
In this session, Yang Tao, CEO of Robustel, will explore what he calls the third wave of LoRaWAN. The first wave was connectivity: proving that battery-powered sensors could communicate over long distances. The second wave was network scale: building public, private, and managed LoRaWAN networks. The third wave is now emerging: LoRaWAN moving closer to operational systems, where data needs to be decoded, contextualised, integrated, acted on, and supported over time.
The talk will focus on practical deployment realities rather than hype. Why do many projects become harder after the pilot stage? What happens when LoRaWAN data needs to become BACnet points, Modbus registers, OPC UA data, MQTT payloads, local alarms, dashboards, or automation logic? When is a simple packet-forwarding gateway enough, and when does local LNS, edge processing, or OT integration become valuable?
This is not a talk about replacing the cloud, replacing LoRaWAN ecosystems, or forcing edge computing into every project. It is about choosing the right architecture for the real deployment problem: simple when possible, integrated when needed.
