Increasing Technician Efficiency with IoT

There are roughly six million commercial buildings in the United States, and the overwhelming majority broadcast nothing about their own health — no telemetry, no diagnostics, no visibility until a tenant complains. When a building asset fails, resolution still runs on a game of telephone: a store manager reports "it's hot," a facility manager relays something vague, and a technician spends hours just identifying and diagnosing the failed asset. Most of the budget is spent before the fault is even found, and a single problem routinely takes at least two truck rolls to solve. At the same time, a lack of skilled tradesmen means hourly rates are increasing dramatically, with an estimated 2.1 million skilled positions projected to go unfilled by 2030 in the US.
This talk argues that the highest-leverage use of IoT in the built environment isn't another dashboard — it's making each technician dramatically more effective. Drawing on FTL's field deployments across multi-site retail portfolios, Clayton Callander will show why wireless controls (using LoRaWAN) is the enabling layer for the underserved 95% of buildings that could never justify a traditional BAS. He'll then show the harder half of the problem — collapsing real-time equipment data, asset records, and work-order history into a single prioritized, plain-language work order that reaches the technician before they leave the shop.
