At Upminster Windmill we developed the website smartmolen.com, for remote monitoring of heritage windmills. The system is now live at over 20 mills in the UK, Netherlands and Germany. The site uses data from LoRaWAN sensors via the Things Network. We monitor the sails turning and the orientation of the mill's cap, which is really important for safety and heritage conservation purposes. Integrating with wind and weather data from 3rd parties, we are supporting some really interesting research into windmill conservation. We have a fascinating story of building custom sensors and developing a website that drives interest and engagement with windmills, which has a thriving community of interested volunteers across Europe.
