Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR): The New Frontier
Avi Rosenthal
Z-Wave has long been recognized as a leading wireless protocol for the smart home, powering over 100 million deployed devices worldwide. With the introduction of Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR), the technology has broken through the limits of traditional smart home applications to unlock new possibilities across commercial, industrial, and large-area IoT deployments.
ZWLR extends the reach of Z-Wave to over one mile, supports networks of up to 4,000 nodes, and introduces a highly scalable star topology – features that make it uniquely suited for applications such as building automation, energy management, and sensor-based monitoring. Operating in the sub-GHz spectrum with ultra-low power requirements, ZWLR enables reliable, secure, and long-life wireless sensor networks that can serve as critical infrastructure for tomorrow’s connected world.
This session will provide a technically grounded look at ZWLR’s architecture, performance benefits, and deployment potential within the broader IoT ecosystem. Attendees will also hear how Z-Wave Alliance members and silicon providers (such as Trident IoT and Silicon Labs) are advancing multiprotocol coexistence, enabling Z-Wave to complement technologies such as LoRa, Bluetooth, and Zigbee within shared silicon environments.
By delivering extended range, massive scalability, and proven security and interoperability, ZWLR positions Z-Wave as a vital technology in the evolving connectivity environment. This presentation will highlight how Z-Wave is meeting the needs of next-generation IoT deployments while continuing to expand its role as a trusted global standard.
